Avoid Forums like the Plague!

The Internet is a living hub of information, right at our fingertips, and right at the centre of this information hub is the communal area, the message board, forum, comment thread, or whatever form it takes.

When you're researching your next piece of gear for a studio, these seem like a good place to go. And they are, for one reason that I'll touch on later. But on the most part, like anything, don't believe everything you read within these forums. In fact, in some cases you can't believe anything you read.

I did do a post on this on the previous incarnation of this blog, but didn't copy it over as its been a while since then and I only love my Macs more. I'm not a complete Jobs fanboy, I don't think they're the be all and end all of computing. I recognise the flaws and some of them even annoy me. Luckily, there's enough good things to keep me here.

There's a constant rat race amongst beginner recordists, who always ask for "the best". What is the 'best' microphone/preamp/interface/computer/DAW etc. And they always end up with answers which basically say "Come back when you have $3000".

Its not necessary.

How to circumvent the horrors of GAS

Ah, the ol GAS. That dreaded Gear Acquisition Syndrome. I’ve been a long term sufferer, spending thousands of pounds over the past few years on impulse buys and unnecessary gear which is then sold on eBay for peanuts. Its a painful thing to do.

Yet the damn thing persists. I keep looking at the latest top model and thinking “wow, my setup would DEFINITELY be better with that!”. Even worse is the thought of “I should wait until I have X piece of gear before I continue working on anything.”

How to play a damn good gig

Of course, all of this is my opinion and is garnered from my own meandering experience, but take from it what you will and add what you think is missing.
Too many times I’ve been to gigs and been disappointed by otherwise good bands. Writing songs and playing them in front of a crowd is one thing, but playing a good gig…well, that can be a whole new kettle of fish.
